[COVER LETTER]

Dear Human Resource Manager,

Hello, my name is Jieming Jin, a young Chinese professional with one-year working experience. I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a Master of Architecture degree in 2016. Due to some working-related reasons, I just chose to resign from my former employer, an architectural firm called Pattern R+D in Atlanta, and I am currently trying to apply for another entry-level Architectural Designer position. I am a Chinese citizen with a three-year STEM OPT visa, which allows me to work legally in the United States from Feb-13-2017 to Feb-12-2020. Before I started working as a young professional, I worked with my professors as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in U.Penn. My English is fluent, and I also know the industrial requirements for being a qualified Architectural Designer, such as program proficiencies and designing skills. If your firm is looking for an interesting, ambitious and reliable young talent, I’m looking forward to joining your team.

Academically, I am skilled with many software, and I’m also good at designing. On behalf of my software proficiency and my design abilities, I have been invited to work as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in U.Penn for seminar and design studio. I strongly believe this can demonstrate my outstanding academic performances. I not only assisted the students for the technical support but also was assigned lectures and weekly desk critiques to the terminal-year master’s students. The projects I participated have been exhibited in theaters or published in U.Penn’s yearbook.

As for the latest professional experience, I just finished working in Pattern R+D. I was mainly working on housing projects as an Architectural Designer. From code research, site survey to existing plan, from proposed plan, construction documentation all the way to permitting, I was familiar with the whole process and practiced my skills a lot. However, there were some reasons that finally caused my resignation. Most importantly, in Pattern R+D I was using Rhino to make all the technical drawings but not Revit or AutoCAD. From my perspective, Rhino is easier for modeling in conceptual design, but the efficiency and collaboration with other professions for using Revit in developed design is incomparable. Moreover, I think as a young professional, I should be acting like a sponge to absorb as much knowledge as I can, and I should be standing in the trend of the industry. I believe I can do more than historic housing and renovation projects, and I would prefer to work in a Rhino-Revit workflow firm. Among other reasons, I decided to resign and find my next job.

During my undergraduate school, I once worked as an intern architect in an international architectural firm called Woods Bagot in 2013, and another Chinese corporation called Shanghai Construction Group Co.Ltd. I was responsible for schematic design, diagram drawing and developing conceptual models. After the internships, I received a letter of recommendation from the Global Director of Woods Bagot, Mr. Rodger Dalling, and another one from the vice president of the SCG, Mr. Xu Jingjing. From their observations, they both believe that I will be a good “people” person in the future. I’ve also found my online business in my fourth year, where I gained my management skills and learned how to deal with the clients. I consider myself as a competitive applicant not only as a designer, dafter but also with leadership qualities and more potentialities.

I sincerely hope you could provide me with an opportunity to talk about myself. I would also appreciate if we can keep in touch if there’s no current opening in your firm.

Thank you for spending your time to read my cover letter. I’m looking forward to hearing back from you.

Sincerely,

Jieming Jin
